The history of the Lusitano purebred…

The National

at the Riding Center of Figueiró dos Vinhos

Everything leads us to believe that the south of the Iberian Peninsula was spared from the effects of the last glaciation that occurred about 15,000 years ago. This peculiarity allowed some herds of primitive horses to survive and multiply in its fertile valleys, practically free from outside influences and facilitated their early domestication.

Their ancestors are common to the Sorraia and Arabian breeds. These two breeds form the so-called Iberian horses, which evolved from primitive horses existing in the Iberian Peninsula from which the small group of the Sorraia breed that still exists is supposed to have descended directly.

The pure-bred Lusitano has a natural aptitude for Haute École and high air exercises, since it puts its hind legs under the weight with great ease. Thus, the Lusitano shows itself not only in bullfighting and classical riding, but also in federated equestrian disciplines such as dressage obstacles, horseriding and especially working equitation, being on the same level as the best specialists in the sport.

Curiosity… Did you know that these Portuguese horses were used in the production of the film “The Lord of the Rings”?
