The Portuguese Venice
Aveiro is a coastal city that won the title of Portuguese Venice, due to the canals that cut the city.
The ride on the moliceiros boats is today one of the main attractions of Aveiro, however the city has places that by their intrinsic beauty, impose themselves as landmarks of mandatory reference and visit.
The White Gold
of Aveiro
The Aveiro salt – locally known as “white gold” – is obtained through ancient methods and is still present today in the active salt marshes.
What to visit?

Costa Nova
According to history, the fishermen who lived in this region began to paint their houses so that it would be possible to recognize them from afar, when they returned from a trip on the high seas.
Today some of these constructions remain as houses, others have become restaurants and tourist establishments.

Aveiro Train Station
Considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Aveiro, after having been subject to renovation works, it now functions as the city’s visiting room.
The building contains on its facade, magnificent panels of polychrome tiles (blue and yellow) depicting railway scenes, natural, cultural as well as traditional activities of the region.

Art Nouveau
Aveiro is distinguished by the architecture of its buildings in the style of the “Art Nouveau” artistic movement.
Most of the buildings are located in the city center, with their facades adorned with polychromatic tile panels and details in wrought iron, which transport us on a fantastic journey back in time to the beginning of the twentieth century, giving the city a charm that is difficult to escape.

Moliceiros
In the past, these boats were used as support in the harvesting of moliço, a seaweed often used to fertilize agricultural land.
Today, they are an attraction for tourists who can tour the beautiful canals of the so-called Portuguese Venice on a moliceiro boat trip along the ria.
